A Book You Must Own
In general, I'm not a fan of photography books because of them are horrible. It seem that to become an expert and have a book published all you have to do is take cliched photos and know a publishers. Yuck. It is rare that I find a book that actually answers some of the questions I have about the practice of photography.
Chris Orwig's People Pictures: 30 Exercises for Creating Authentic Photographs isn't about how to pose someone's body so that they look skinny or how to take the perfect senior portrait. Is about how to connect with someone to find something interesting about them to make a great portrait. It isn't about gear, HDR or other buzzwords either. Just about how to make great images which is something I find lacking in most photography books.
If you are serious about making your photography better, you should check it out.
